Towards previously unattainable heights and speeds with Aquila

The Aquila project of Space Team Aachen e.V. has reached a significant milestone in an important competition with its latest rocket. Aquila was the first German team to take part in the world’s largest rocket competition in the USA and achieved remarkable results. The rocket reached an unprecedented speed of over Mach 1.0, exceeding the sonic speed.

Aquila represents the latest competitive rocket project of Space Team Aachen e.V. It offers 23 students an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge from their studies in practice and to gain valuable experience in the field of space projects. After the successful launches of the first two competition rockets, CARL I and II, as part of the European Rocketry Challenge (EuRoC) in 2020 and 2021, Aquila started the jump to the largest rocket competition in the world, the Spaceport America Cup (SAC), which takes place in New Mexico (USA).

Every year over 150 teams from different countries gather there to launch their rockets and exchange ideas. Aquila represented a remarkable premiere: a German rocket took part in this competition for the first time. The special highlight was breaking the sonic barrier and reaching a speed of at least Mach 1.0 (approx. 1235 km/h).
